My name is Noora Alsamman. I became a muslimah when I was 15 years old. (Ten years ago) My mom who is Syrian (family from Haleb) born in Detroit and my dad is an american with parents from polish/slovak background. I was also born in Detroit, Michigan. My grandma is maronite and mom catholic and dad catholic. When I was fifteen I wanted to be a nun. I was in my World History Class in highschool and we were studying all the major religions. When we got to Islam I was very much interested and there was an egyptian brother in my class who was correcting the teacher when he made mistakes and I thought wow he (the egyptian brother) must have strong faith to be able correcting the teacher like that. So one day I asked him what is the difference between catholicism and islam. He said not that much. Muslims believe there is only one true God, who created the world and provides all the things his creatures need. Nobody is equal to God or as great. Muslims use the Arabic word for God - Allah. Prayers (salah) are important to Muslims and are said five times a day at home or at work, or at the mosque. Before praying Muslims wash carefully in a prescribed manner (wudu). A set sequence of movements accompanies the prayers, which are said in Arabic. A clean place is essential for prayer and many Muslims use a mat for this purpose. Assalamu’alaikum ____ , If you’re standing in prayer in these last few days of Ramadan doing your best to ‘feel’ closer to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) yet somehow feel distanced, If you’re wondering why those around you are all crying like babies whilst you’re completely emotion-less, If you wish you could be of those with soft hearts and tearful eyes in Ramadan, but it doesn’t seem to happen and you fail to reach that level in your spiritual worship – then it’s time to have a serious one-to-one conversation with your heart. Ask your heart, why is it so cold? Why do the Words of its Creator have no effect or impact on it at all? Is it that arrogant that it doesn’t need it’s Lord?! Ask it why is it so hard? Why no emotions are expressed of either fear or joy of being with its Creator? Ask it why is it a hypocrite?
