Assalammualaikum,

Your email is very informative and enlightening. Not just it realizes us about our 'eating culture', but as I like to read Sherlock Holmes novels, I found out that the great detective also keeps himself hungry. In the novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who was a medical doctor), Sherlock Holmes explains to his dear friend, Dr Watson, that by keeping himself hungry, his mind works faster to solve mysteries.
Even from my own experience, when I eat during the time I'm studying, I would suddenly become sleepy. So I learn that if I want to keep my mind sharp, I shouldn't be eating heavily.

Furthermore, let us all look at what happen to people who eat a lot: diabetes, heart
problems, obesity and the list goes on and on. So, learning from Rasulullah (peace be upon him), we learn to control our eating habit. Not eating does not necessarily relate to being poor, rather to take care of our mind and body.

On another perspective, let us see the two very different scenario. Some people in the west die because of diseases caused by too much eating. In the meantime, people in the south (African countries) are dying because of lack of food (malnutrions, etc). So, it's not that the world is not producing enough food, but as one of my lecturers once said, "It's the distribution of food which is not balance."
In the end, both spell for trouble. We have to spend a lot of money on drugs and medical care for problems related with too much eating and raise funds to help the poor people without enough supply of food.

In conclusion, I read somewhere about Rasulullah (peace be upon him) sunnah saying : Eat before you are hungry and stop before you are full. Correct me if I'm wrong. Selamat berbuka puasa semua!
